Soil Classification and Education 2 Conference, Torun, Poland.
The official excursion of the year 2022 of the WRB Working Group will lead us to Iceland.
Field Workshop and Conference of the IUSS Commission Soil Classification
We plan to see soils of the following Reference Soil Groups: Cryosol, Solonetz, Solonchak, Andosol, Stagnosol, Phaeozem, Gypsisol, Calcisol, Luvisol, Cambisol, Arenosol, Fluvisol. The purpose of the excursion is to test whether the current edition of the WRB is adequate to classify these soils.'
The chief organizer is Undrakh-Od Baatar from the Soil Division, Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and Grassland, Mongolian Academy of Sciences, and from the Soil Monitoring Professorship Team, Mongolian University of Life Sciences. She is also Vice-President of the Central Asian Soil Science Society.
Globalization itself and solving the global environmental issues, as well as the unification of research and teaching on a global level, require the harmonization of technical languages, such as the terminology and classifications used in soil science. Important parts of a professional language are rules for soil characterization and classification. As so many ’languages’ – national systems – are used in the world, a common Lingua Franca is needed to understand each other. World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB) is probably the best proposal to facilitate the international exchange of information in soil science. The workshop WRB Summer is organized under the auspices of IUSS Working Group WRB by experts organizing soil classification trainings since nearly 10 years. The aim of the event is to help beginners using WRB or to enhance skills in soil classification during 1-day indoor and 3-days intensive field activities. The venue is the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage city of Torun. Students, PhD students and young researches are particularly invited (but senior researchers are also welcomed). A website providing more information is available at:
A field trip into a pedological mosaic of Transylvania is proposed for the 2018 workshop. The soil pattern is imposed by a varied relief starting from lowlands, with extensive alluvial terraces, to tablelands and mountains. During the workshop, we will experience a diversity of soils (approximately 20 soil profiles) that include Chernozems, Phaeozems, Luvisols, Cambisols, Technosols and soils with archeological interest formed in Roman Empire period heritage sites. Most of these soils show intensive and extensive agricultural land use including one of the biggest vineyards in Europe. This field workshop is sponsored by the IUSS Working Group WRB
This workshop will look at differently formed automorphous, semihydromorphous and hydromorphous soils (approximately 24 soil profiles) in intensively and extensively used agricultural lands and in deciduous and coniferous forest lands of the boreo-nemoral region.
Soils are developed mainly on Late Weichselian glacial deposits (formed by loamy sand, sandy clay, loam, clay, gravel, sand) and altered to some extent by postglacial aeolian, marine, lacustrine, alluvial and mire sediments, as well as formed on pre-Quaternary sedimentary rocks. The soils show different organic surface layers: mull, moder, mor, amphi etc.
